Sustainability & circular economy
January 7, 2021
In 2020, as the world grappled with a global shutdown, I found myself at my family home on the Gulf of Thailand. Each day, I walked the beach—deserted by people but not by the manmade debris washing ashore. Consumed by climate anxiety while listening to podcasts about ocean acidification and global temperature records, I felt a deep need to shift my career towards sustainability.
“The best time to make your climate commitment is always right now... Start with what you're good at. And do your best." - Mary Annaïse Heglar
Inspired by the words of climate justice journalist Mary Anaise Heglar, I created Circularity Club, a platform to ignite sustainability conversations among modern professionals. This passion project was short-lived, due to my focus shifting towards launching Say it Good stuio, though I'm wokring on plans to resurrect the brand through new mediums.
Driven by my passion for the circular economy and dismayed by the relentless plastic pollution, I researched local Thai initiatives dedicated to plastic recycling. This led me to #tide Ocean Plastics and entrepreneurs like Michel Pardos of Ranong Recycling Center and Tristan LeCompte of Second Life, who were pioneering "Plastic Credits." Invited to join a field trip along the Andaman coast, I embarked on a 12-hour train journey south to meet them. Over several days, we visited island communities, engaging with local fishermen and the Moken tribes about their grassroots plastic recovery initiatives. I learned how building local recycling ecosystems not only supports the creation of circular materials for lifestyle brands like Caudalie but also fosters equitable community solutions.
Encouraged by Heglar's words, I used my expertise to build a brand, design a website, and launch a newsletter on Substack. With the help of a Thai graphic designer friend, I developed a visual identity that echoed our commitment to sustainability.
"You don't need to identify as an environmentalist to understand that modern society must radically transform toward greater sustainability. It's the future because it's the only way forward. Reshaping business practices to become purpose-driven, regenerative, and guided by circular principles is progress.
Circularity Club is a platform that aims to spark conversations with people who are actively pushing sustainable transformation forward. A passion project with a mission to uncover stories of circular innovation and intersect these with insights and culture. From grassroots to C-suite, and from small-scale to corporate, there is work to be done. We are all in this together,"
To further engage the community, I partnered with The Hive, a coworking space across Southeast Asia, to launch a series of virtual events. As the moderator, I curated and led discussions with key speakers during lunch-time sessions. These virtual panels provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and ideas about circular economy and fostering sustainable practices among professionals during the post-pandemic recovery.
