Hey Spotifiers, let's talk about something important – our planet.

Since 2021, I've collaborated closely with Spotify, supporting the company's internal climate action and ESG initiatives. As Engagement Lead, I create communications and resources that engage Spotify's product and tech teams in their R&D Climate Action program. Our goal is to integrate sustainability practices into everyday work culture, empowering employees to contribute to the company's climate action goals.

"The climate crisis is one of the most pressing issues of our time. It’s something that affects us all, no matter where you are or what you listen to. We must all work to be part of the solution so that our planet and all people can continue to thrive for generations to come. Our approach to tackling the climate crisis has two parts. We have committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. And we are leveraging our platform to raise awareness and drive engagement among millions of listeners and creators." - Life at Spotify, Climate Action

Climate change is a complex topic to talk about, particularly in a diverse workplace where different people have different levels of comprehension and interest. My focus is on crafting communications that break down complexity and inspire action, making it easier for Spotify's global team to understand the role they can play in making day-to-day climate-conscious decisions within their teams and why this matters to Spotify.

Highlights

  • R&D Climate Action Toolkit
Developed an internal microsite complete with handbooks, data tools and educational content, which has become a centralised destination for boosting understanding and engagement around climate action across the company.
  • Newsletter
Launched and managed a regular internal newsletter named 'Hot in here' that keeps product and tech teams updated on the company's climate action progress and how they can get involved.
  • Explainer Video
Produced a motion graphics explainer video that demystifies terms like 'net zero' and the company climate goals, serving as a fundamental educational tool and trailer for Spotify's internal climate action training course.

Outtakes

Below are some teasers of the video (please excuse the low res gifs) created in collaboration with motion designer Florence van Bergen.

Amplifying action

These communication strategies support the internal climate champions network, which has effectively raised the profile and boosted stakeholder buy-in for Spotify's sustainability initiatives internally. The "Path to Net Zero" is now recognized as a strategic company focus.

Hot in Here continues to be a top-performing newsletter with an average 70% open rate and has been celebrated for its relatable tone of voice. The explainer video, which we released on Earth Day 2024, doubled engagement with the climate action training course, and continues to be an effective internal resource.

Emissions impossible?

The climate crisis demands collaboration, especially in the workplace where employees are crucial to innovation and resilience. As of 2024, most of the world's largest companies have pledged to achieve net zero emissions, but only a small fraction are effectively on track to meet this goal. Spotify is leading by example, committing to its climate goals with integrity and leveraging its talented workforce to tackle these ambitious challenges.

Representing Say it Good studio, I'm proud to support Spotify's journey towards net zero. Our efforts aim to nurture more people to become climate champions at work as to drive momentum for the company's climate initiatives. By empowering one of the world's leading tech teams to prioritize climate action and utilize their platform that reaches nearly one billion people globally, I envision a far-reaching ripple effect of positive change.
